Diego Bortoluzzi grew up in the youth academy of Atalanta BC football club. He made his debut in Serie A (Italian first division) with Atalanta in 1985. He played for Atalanta from 1985 to 1987.
He played for a long time in Serie B (Italian second division) with Brescia (1989/90 season), Venice (from 1991 to 1996) and Treviso (from 1997 to 2002) of which he became captain and leader.


Coaching career
After his playing career, Diego Bortoluzzi embarked on a coaching journey at the highest levels of Italian and European football, alternating roles as head coach and assistant coach across Serie A (Italian first division) and the Premier League (English top division).
His coaching career is as follows:
As Head Coach he coached in Serie A (Italian first division):
- Treviso (2005/06 season)
- Palermo (2016/17 season)
As Francesco Guidolin’s Assistant First Team Coach he coached in Serie A (Italian first division):
- Palermo (2004/05 and 2007/08 season)
- Parma (from 2008 to 2010)
- Udinese (from 2010 to 2014) — 2 Champions League qualifications and 3 Europa League runs
As Francesco Guidolin’s Assistant Coach he coached in Premier League (English top division):
- Swansea City (2015/16 season)
As Andrea Mandorlini’s Assistant First Team Coach he coached in Serie A (Italian first division):
- Hellas Verona (2015/16 season)
UEFA Pro Licence
Diego Bortoluzzi holds the UEFA Pro licence, the highest coaching qualification in European football, required to manage teams at the top levels of national leagues and in UEFA competitions such as the Champions League and the Europa League.
